Chapter 13

Charles hitched Daisy up to the wagon, and then helped Cicely into her seat. Two days had passed since they had married, and they were headed to his sister’s house to pick up the children. His children had been excited to hear that they would be spending a couple of days with their cousins, but by the time they were to be picked up they would be eager to go home.

Cicely was looking forward to picking up the children. They both were very well-mannered and obviously properly reared by their father. When their mother had died, Robert would have been around four. That meant that he probably only had very vague memories of his mother. Cicely hoped the children would accept that she, a stranger, would suddenly always be around.

Her first two days of married life with Charles had been wonderful. He was proving to be exactly the man that he had presented himself to be, in his letters. He was kind and considerate, and Cicely could definitely see herself falling in love with him, and hoped he would feel the same. If it were just the two of them, she was certain that the marriage would blossom into a beautiful relationship, but she knew that long-term, the success of her marriage depended on her winning over the hearts of the children. Charles had done a great job preparing them for having a mother, and she hoped that she could fulfill their expectations.

As they turned up the driveway, she saw that the children of both families were already running to meet them, having been alerted by the barking of the Snyder dogs. Sarah and Eli followed soon after. Charles pulled up short and hopped out, holding his arms opened wide. He dropped to his knees and was greeted by the eager shouts of the children.

“Pa! Pa!” Robert and Rose were the first to him, leaping into his arms.

“Uncle Charles!” He was then beset with four additional children, all jostling to wrap their arms around him, or his legs. He very nearly tipped over.

Cicely grinned from her seat as Charles gathered his own children as well as those of his sister into his arms. Then he disentangled himself and stood up with little Rose in his arms and placed her on the seat of the wagon beside Cicely. The other children were picked up one at a time and put into the wagon, until the remaining five were seated safely in the back. Then Charles took his seat and clicked to Daisy to signal her to move forward again. “I’m stealing your children, Eli.”

“Fine by me, but have them back in a week, at least!” called Eli.

The children in the back giggled hysterically as Charles made a slow circle in the dooryard.

“You’re pretty.” Reaching out to touch Cicely’s hair, pulled back in a bun, Rose was grinning from ear to ear.

“And you are beautiful too, sweetheart.” Cicely gave Rose’s nose a little tap, causing her to giggle.

Robert laughed and rolled
